Meet Adam, Tsartlip’s Jordan’s Principle Service Coordinator. Read his introduction interview below.
Can you tell us a bit about who you are and where you’re from?
My name is Adam Gauthier. On my mother’s side, I am Coast Salish from Tla’amin Nation and on my dad’s side, I am Cree from Saulteau First Nation in Moberly Lake located in Treaty 8 territory. Additionally, I have Métis ancestry from Lac Ste. Anne, Alberta. I relocated from my home community located outside of Powell River for post-secondary education and have been in Victoria for 10 years now.
Could you tell me about the background and experience you bring to this position at Tsartlip?
I have a Bachelor of Child and Youth Care with a Child Protection Specialization from the University of Victoria, and I’m currently pursuing a Master of Social Work with an Indigenous Trauma and Resiliency Specialization from the University of Toronto. I also hold a Diploma in Community, Family & Child Studies and a Certificate in Indigenous Family Support from Camosun College.
In my previous roles, I served as a Trainer at the Thunderbird Partnership Foundation, where I developed and delivered culturally relevant training programs. I also was a Social Worker that did Child Protection with the Ministry of Children and Family Development and have been a Child & Youth Care Coordinator with First Nations Health Authority, supporting mental health and wellness initiatives for Indigenous youth.
I am committed to supporting Indigenous communities and have done this through extensive volunteer work, including participation in various advisory committees and working groups. I am a recipient of the 2024 National Indspire Award for First Nations Youth and have been recognized with numerous scholarships for my contributions and academic achievements.
What kind of work will you be doing with Tsartlip?
Under Jordan’s Principle, I’ll be working to ensure that First Nations children and youth (0-19) can access the products, services, and supports they need – when they need them.
I’ll be working with various partners and the province to develop long-term approaches to help better address the unique needs of First Nations children and youth.
What kind of impact do you hope to have during your time at Tsartlip?
I hope to create a positive transformation for children and youth here at Tsartlip through the support of Jordan’s Principle. I strive to have a very supportive and transparent service with families. I hold a lot of accountability and responsibility for the job I’m doing.
What do you like to do when you’re not at work?
While completing my Master’s in Social Work, I’m spending time with family and friends. I enjoy exploring the outdoors, playing soccer, any travel time if I can get it, reading, and watching documentaries.
