Meet Katie, Tsartlip’s New Nurse. Read her introduction interview below.
Can you tell us a bit about who you are and where you’re from?
My name is Katie Campbell, and I’m Cree from Michel First Nation in Treaty 6 territory! I grew up in Mohkinstsis (Calgary), but have always loved the ocean, and wanted to move out to the island for years. I’m so happy I finally made it here, it’s a dream come true!
Could you tell me about the background and experience you bring to this position at Tsartlip?
I began my nursing journey in the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) in Calgary! I worked in the NICU for almost two years. It was a really fast-paced environment, but I’m lucky to have learned so much there. I love working with babies and families, so I’m excited to continue working with kids and families here at Tsartlip!
What kind of work will you be doing with Tsartlip?
As a community health nurse, I’m excited to get to know the Tsartlip community! I’m also looking forward to working with the Elders – I feel like I’m gonna learn so much from them!! It’s a real privilege.
What kind of impact do you hope to have during your time at Tsartlip?
I want to help other Indigenous folks navigate the healthcare system. I’ve seen racism when I’ve been at work as a nurse, and I’ve also seen it when my family members try to access the healthcare system. I want to try my best to create a safe space for Tsartlip community members to come to.
What do you like to do when you’re not at work?
I love hiking, spending time outside, and doing arts and crafts! I can get lost in a craft for hours and hours without noticing the time going by! My next goal is to learn how to bead!
