Tsartlip Stewardship Department to Be Renamed In SENĆOŦEN

To ensure the work of the Stewardship Department is being done in a good way, Director Will Morris has formed a leadership committee along with the Knowledge Holder’s advisory committee to provide cultural, language, decision-making, and strategic direction support.

The advisory committee consists of Elders and Knowledge Holders including Ivan Wayne Morris , Paul Sam, Joseph Seward, and Carl Olsen who bring invaluable language and cultural expertise to inform policy and decision making.

The goal of the department is to increase the capacity of the community to participate in the sacred responsibility and relationship with the marine environment. In order to do this in a good way, the use of SENĆOŦEN must be reinstated when and where possible.

As such, the advisory committee is working on a new SENĆOŦEN name for the Stewardship department, one that better captures the spirit of the initiative. In addition, the Knowledge Holders will also begin providing SENĆOŦEN lessons.
