Lead Negotiator

The Tsartlip First Nation is pleased to invite applicants to apply to the permanent, full-time Lead Negotiator position.

The Lead Negotiator will lead Tsartlip’s ongoing negotiation efforts, including communications with Canada and BC regarding the Recognition of Indigenous Rights and Self-Determination (RIRSD) table. This role involves managing Tsartlip priorities at the RIRSD table, collaborating with the Tsartlip RIRSD Negotiation Team to advance Tsartlip’s goals and objectives, and participating in ancillary negotiations with federal and provincial representatives. Reporting to the Tsartlip leadership, the ideal Lead Negotiator will support Indigenous committees, task forces, negotiation teams, and governments. The role encompasses vision setting, identifying objectives, determining priorities, engaging the community, and negotiating with Crown representatives. The Lead Negotiator reports to the Band Administrator.

Education & Experience

  •  Grade 12 graduation (Dogwood or BC Adult Graduation Diploma);
  • Degree or diploma in a related discipline such as law, public or business administration, political or social science, First Nations Studies, or Indigenous Governance an asset;
  • Experience working with Indigenous people, organizations, and communities;
  • Experience in the preparation and management of budgets;
  • Experience developing and preparing a variety of written reports, spreadsheets, presentations and other documentation independently and from written and verbal instructions;
  • Experience coordinating events and meetings and preparing agendas;
  • Strong understanding of Aboriginal and treaty rights;
  • 5 years of current experience in strategic planning, community engagement, negotiation planning, and/or priority setting workshops or sessions or an equivalent combination of related education, training and experience;
  • Clean criminal record check required.

The Tsartlip First Nation is one of five communities that constitute the W̱SÁNEĆ Nation. Located on the west side of the Saanich Peninsula (south east Vancouver Island), the W̱SÁNEĆ people have lived on these lands since time immemorial. Our vision is to honour the past, while moving forward and creating opportunities for our future generations. We have a population of 1038 registered members living both on and off Tsartlip First Nation territory. Tsartlip 653 is comprised of Goldstream IR13, Mayne Island IR6, Senanus Island IR10 and South Saanich IR1 covering approximately 334 hectares in size and includes single family residential and leased homes, band administrations and commercial developments.
