What Is Measles?
Measles is a highly contagious virus that spreads through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. It causes fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a rash that spreads across the body. Measles can lead to serious complications—especially in young children, elders, and those with weakened immune systems.
Measles cases are increasing globally and across Canada, and immunization remains the best defense.
As of May 24, 2025:
- Alberta: 591 confirmed cases
- British Columbia: 12 cases
- Canada (total): 2,515 measles cases
How Can You Prevent It?
The best protection is the MMR vaccine (measles, mumps, rubella). Two doses are about 97% effective at preventing measles. It’s safe, effective, and widely available.
Were you born before 1970?
You are likely considered immune due to natural infection, but you can still check with us to be sure.
